Frontman Steven Hampshire blasted Berwick out of the Scottish cup at the third hurdle courtesy of a second half double at Shielfield Park.

It took his tally to six goals in three games and gave Ian Campbell the perfect start to his term in charge at Brechin after taking over from twin brother Dick.

Berwick dominated the opening spell, but their lack of punch cost them dearly.

Rangers forced 13 corners but only one, an in-swinger from David Murie, caused Craig Nelson any trouble and the goalkeeper also saved well from Darren Smith and Gareth Hutchison.

With the gale behind them, City took only two minutes to go ahead in the second half. Kevin Byers dispossessed David Murie and his low cross into the box was steered into the corner of the net by Hampshire.

Craig Winter added a second, taking his time before hammering the ball in after Rangers failed to clear. Hampshire made it three when he picked up a pass 20 yards out and crashed in a shot which deflected off Robert Horn past a helpless Gary O'Connor.

City were completely on top in the closing quarter as dejected Rangers battled to prevent further damage. Rangers' new signing, 19-year-old Ian McSween, on loan from Falkirk, marked his debut by being booked late on for unsporting behaviour when he went to ground under challenge by keeper Nelson in the box.
