Bottom-of-the-table Berwick upset the odds by beating the league leaders Brechin. They did it on merit with a vastly-improved performance, but City had a real off day suffering a second successive defeat.

It was a blunder by James Sharp which gave Berwick the ideal start. He completely misjudged an attempted header to goalkeeper Craig Nelson, and Darren Smith nipped in to lob the ball home after just five minutes.

Rangers had the better of the first half and could have had a second when Ian Little swept the ball forward, but Sharp redeemed himself with a goal-line clearance.

Charlie King was inches away from a first half equaliser with a great shot, but he was on the mark in the 51st minute. He turned inside from 25 yards and fired in a cross-shot which suprised Gary O'Connor and flew in off the post.

Berwick looked dangerous with man-of-the-match Darren Smith impressive. He had one shot brilliantly turned over by Nelson and then set up a late winner.

Receiving the ball from Grant McNicoll, he took it 40 yards across field before playing in Kevin McLeish, whose low cross was turned in by Kevin Gordon.
