A goal in each half helped maintain Brechin's recent run in a fiery Angus derby against rivals Forfar.

The result means the Glebe Park side have now won eight of their last nine games.

Brechin should have been a goal up after just eight minutes, but Craig Winter fired high and wide from 12 yards when it looked easier to score. Paul Ritchie was also denied a goal early on when his effort hit the inside of the post.

Chris Templeman had the ball in the net soon afterwards when the Brechin striker converted a Richie flick, but the goal was ruled offside. Winter soon made amends for his early miss when he coolly converted a long Steven Hampshire pass to make it one-nil.

The home side were gifted an opportunity to make it two just before the interval when Alan Rattray handled in the area to concede a spot-kick. Graeme Gibson stepped up, but Allan Creer guessed correctly and saved to his left.

The visitors came out for the second half with renewed vigour and it took the save of the match to deny them an equaliser. Paul Shields fired a hard, driving effort but Craig Nelson somehow tipped the shot on to the bar.

With 20 minutes left and against the run of play, the home side doubled their lead. James Smith's 20-yard free-kick took a wicked deflection off Paul Lunan and found the net, putting the game beyond doubt.
