Brechin opened up a six- point lead at the top of the second division with a victory over their closest rivals Stranraer.

After a tentative opening period, it was Stranraer who went closest to scoring after 20 minutes when Gary McPhee had a shot blocked on the line by Paul Deas.

After 23 minutes Stranraer's Paul McManus played the ball through to Allan Jenkins and Craig Nelson did well to save at his feet. A minute later Paul Ritchie exchanged passes with Craig Winter and shot wide.

Stranraer opened the scoring after 29 minutes when McManus ran on to a long ball from Jenkins and shot past the advancing goalkeeper.

They might have stretched their lead in the 34th minute when a pass from Jenkins released Fraser Wright, but his chip just cleared the cross bar.

Brechin tried to fight back and in first half stoppage time a cross from Stuart Callaghan was turned for a corner before Winter could connect on the back post.

Brechin equalised after 51 minutes when a Callaghan corner was headed goalwards by James Sharp and Steven Hampshire scored from close range.

Brechin looked to get their noses in front and David White almost scored with a header from a Callaghan cross. Then Ritchie cut in and had a drive saved by Michael McGovern.

On the hour mark Brechin were awarded a penalty when Murray Henderson brought down Hampshire. Callaghan took the kick and McGovern dived to his right to bring off a fine save. Brechin, however, scored from the resulting corner when Ritchie headed the ball on and Hampshire got the final touch from close range.

Brechin almost stretched their lead in the 70th minute when a Scott Walker header from a Callaghan corner was saved.

Brechin were reduced to 10 men after 72 minutes when White was sent off for a second booking after pulling back Kevin Finlayson.

Stranraer pressed for an equaliser, and after 80 minutes a close-range header from McManus forced a superb save from Nelson.
