Fans were treated to a thrilling second period after a stifled first half threatened to leave supporters snoozing in the sun.

Ironically however the only goal of the game came just a minute before the break.

Forfar's Barry Sellars made a strong run into the Brechin box forcing keeper David Hay to block.

He spilled the ball however at the feet of Paul Shields and he set up Sellars to recover to thump home his shot inside the near post.

Brechin came out fighting after the interval, but found Forfar matched their work rate and more.

Paul Tosh almost doubled his side's lead four minutes in when his chipped shot over the keeper struck the post.

Brechin tested home keeper Michael Brown on several occasions but could not find a way past him, Brown pulling off fantastic stops from Paul Ritchie and a point-blank header from Scott Walker.

The game flared up in the 79th minute when Jay Stein and Paul Deas clashed in midfield and referee Tom Brown flashed red at both players.

Brown was at the centre of controversy again when he failed to spot his assistant flagging for offside and as play continued Tosh waltzed into the box and thumped his shot high into the net.

The Forfar celebrations were cut short however as what would have been the clinching goal was chalked off for the earlier infringement.

Brechin pushed for an equaliser but Forfar comfortably held out for the deserved three points.
