After they dominated the first half, Morton surrendered a goal right on half-time and Brechin capitalised to secure a comfortable win.

In their first home game since the departure of manager John McCormack, Morton started brightly. Peter Weatherson cleverly played in Chris Millar, whose low firmly-struck drive flew inches wide.

Jim McAlistair roused the crowd with a thrilling run and exchange with John Maisano, but the early fire died out and Brechin settled to a disciplined, if unthreatening, pattern.

Marc McCulloch's cross was completely missed by Weatherson before Millar surged on to a Maisano pass only to blast the ball off 'keeper Craig Nelson and send the rebound over the bar. McAlister then hammered a shot off the bar, and Maisano and Weatherson hit the side-net ing when they should have hit the target.

Incredibly, Brechin scored with their first attempt. Steven Hampshire crossed from the right and Paul Ritchie's strike was going wide until Graeme Gibson stuck out his left leg to send the ball flying past Craig Coyle.

Brechin began to exploit Ton's uncertainties and burly defender, Scott McCulloch, ambled forward to smash a tremendous free-kick off the underside of the bar from forty 40 yards. Then in the 61st minute Hampshire rounded Coyle to tap in number two.

Substitute Chris Templeman netted the third when he strode on to a through ball and beat Coyle comfortably from the edge of the box with a low, well-placed shot.
