A stunning double salvo from Hamilton was enough to see off basement strugglers Brechin City at New Douglas Park in match that was pleasing on the eye but left little for the 1,117 in attendance to get excited about.

It was not until the 36th minute that Hamilton injected any sort of urgency into their attacking play. Mark Gilhaney picked up the ball on the left wing before picking out Juanjo at the back post. The little Spaniard connected with a stunning left-foot volley to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

Brechin were reduced to 10 men minutes after the restart when left-back Danny Grainger was given his marching orders for a terrible two-footed lunge.

Hamilton quickly capitalised on their personnel advantage with Derek Fleming picking out the unmarked Gilhaney in the Brechin box. The winger had the time to pick his spot, curling the ball over Craig Nelson to give his side an unassailable lead.

Brechin almost notched a consolation effort when Steve Hampshire was played through on goal, but the substitute could only watch in dismay as his net-bound effort was acrobatically parried by Dave McEwan.

With their victory, Accies climbed into third position in the table while Brechin can only look forward to life in the Second Division for next season.
