Brechin 2-3 Stranraer

Well, another week, another defeat as Brechin yet again slumped against Stranraer at Glebe Park. Ian Campbell's team selection was a little strange to say the least, when our prize asset Kevin Byers was played at right back when his is most creative on the right of midfield or in the centre.

Anyway, enough moaning about the tactics, Brechin got off to an absolute flyer and took the lead in the opening few minutes. The ball pinged about in the box like a pin-ball machine in an arcade, as Barry John Corr denied both Gerry Britton and Steven Hampshire, before the ball fell to Kevin Byers who made no mistake from a few yards out, rifling into the net.

However, the lead didn't last and Stranraer went on to completely dominate the rest of the first half and about 10 minutes later, Stranraer scored three goals to put them in complete control in the space of about 7 minutes! First of all a cross from the right by Lee Sharp was headed powerfully into the net by centre back Murray Henderson to equalise for the Blues, before Lee Sharp crossed from the right hand side which was headed powerfully into the net by centre back Murray Henderson just minutes later, and although Nelson got a hand to it this time, it was a little freaky that a centre back scored two against us in the space of two minutes, from crosses from the same side by the same player. We really need to defend better than that.

While we were moaning about the standard of the defending which led to the goals which put Stranraer in front, we then conceded an equally embarrassing goal about five minutes later. Michael Moore picked out skipper Allan Jenkins who struck the ball tamely from outside the box and the ball somehow trickled into the far corner. Whether Nelson saw the ball late or he couldn't be arsed getting down to the shot we won't know for sure.

Half time couldn't come quick enough, the team were playing terribly and we were in desperate need of the "hairdryer" treatment by Ian Campbell, and I have to say there was a vast improvement in the second half, but not quite enough to equalise. City pulled a goal back a few minutes before the hour mark, in similar fashion to the first. Barry John Corr once again denied the City twice before the ball once again fell kindly for Kevin Byers who once again made no mistake from the a few yards out, rifling ome his 2nd of the game and his second of the season.

City pushed for an equaliser but to no avail. A very poor performance and if we want to consolodate ourselves in this division then we need to win our home matches against fellow relegation candidates. Dundee next week as well, not the game you want when you want to get your first win on board!
