City dump Forfar out of the Cup on Penalties

Brechin fought back from a 3-1 defecit to draw 3-3 with Forfar, eventually going through on penalties. What turned out to be a somewhat dull, drab game, eventually turned out to be somewhat of
City's Grant Johnston
a goal-fest. City had two chances to open the scoring early on, both Templeman and Gibson having shots that didn't really trouble Ferrie in the Forfar goal.

Jay Stein was the next player to have an attempt, but he pulled his shot wide after some good passing with Gibson put him through on goal. in the end, City seemed to rue the missed chances of the opening half hour, with Forfar taking the lead. A Paul Lunan cross was met by Shields, whose effort was cleared off the line. Daniel Ogunmade picked up the loose ball, and send in another ball, which Paul Shields this time sent past the helpless Davie Hay in the City goal.

By this point, City were never looking like getting in the game, and when Forfar doubled their lead just after half time, through a Martin Maher goal - he took advantage of a defensive error by McCulloch - It looked like City were to lose yet another game this season.

Graham Gibson did pull one back for City, though, in the 58th minute - a well worked move, with ex-Loon Scott McCulloch playing him clean through on goal, and the striker really couldn't miss, as he poked the ball through Ferrie's legs.

Forfar re-established their two-goal lead in the 65th minute, Hugh Davidson taking the ball for a run, before crossing for Taylor to send the ball past Hay, even though he looked to be offside.

City began to put pressure on, Stein going close, before a Marc McCulloch cross was neatly headed under Ferrie by none other than Chris Templeman - boy, did he need that goal! - Two minutes later, City found themselves level. Templeman flicked the ball through to Grant Johnston, who half-volleyed the ball from 25 yards, past the helpless keeper, and in off the post. 3-3.

The game looked like it was going into extra time, or so we thought. After the full-time whistle, it was announced that 30 minutes extra time would be played. A couple of seconds later, however, it emerged that both teams decided to go straight to penalties, to let everyone get home early.

City looked in trouble when Derek Clark's spot-kick was saved, but Davie Hay had a fine save from one of the Forfar players, and it went to sudden death. Forfar's sub Lowing missed his, leaving Grant Johnston to save the day again for City, scoring his brilliantly and sending City through to the second round.
