STRANRAER'S first home win since January 2 kept them very much involved with south-west neighbours Queen of the South in the battle to avoid the end of season relegation play-offs. With managerless Brechin seemingly on their way down, the fact Stranraer still have something to fight for made them deserved winners of a scrappy, unsatisfactory match.

Stranraer's cause was in no small measure assisted by the fact Brechin skipper Scott Walker had a nightmare opening quarter.

n just six minutes he deflected a Stephen Swift 18 yarder out of the reach of goalkeeper Craig Nelson to give Stranraer a fortuitous lead. Their seemed little doubt that Nelson would have gathered Swift's shot before Walker's unfortunate intervention.

Three minutes later Walker fell awkwardly as he moved to challenge Stranraer's David Hamilton and in falling he injured himself but more cruelly brought down Hamilton who picked himself up to slot home the penalty to give Stranraer a two-goal cushion.

As the second half got under way it was Brechin whom had the better start, on 47 minutes Gerry Britton shock off the attentions of his marker on the left hand side, turned and fired in a low shot towards Corr whom pounced on the ball but it served as a wake up call to Stranraer that Brechin were going to make a real game of it. Moments later White chipped a speculative shot goal-wards which seemed to have Corr in a right tizz. The ball rebounded off Corr and the post before the keeper managed to get a grip of it properly to the relief of him, his team-mates and 500 of his friends in the stand! The rest of the game was played out in the midfield with Hamilton and the tenacious Aitken holding their ground well. With a couple of half chance for either side in the last ten minutes, this game pattered out and when the full time whistle went there was a big cheer from the home support as Stranraer took their points tally to a highly respectable 27 points. Their joy was only tempered by the news filtering through from New Douglas Park that Queen of the South had beaten Hamilton on their own patch to stay right behind the Blues in the First Division survival race.
