Ross County 1-0 Brechin City

City players and supporters made the long trek to Dingwall to take on Ross County who are currently top of the pile in division one. County and City both gained creditable draws last week-end as they shared the spoils with St Johnstone and Clyde respectively. However, Ross County started the match 9 places above City, and they finished 9 places above City as Queen of the South's miserable start to the season continued as they were held to a goalless draw against local rivals Stranraer at Stair Park.

Ross County showed their intent to win from the start and came close to the opener twice in the opening few minutes. A low and dangerous cross into the box went righyt across the face of goal with no takers, while another cross from the right hand side gave Nucklowski the chance to score but he couldn't get any contact on the ball to direct it into the net.

City did have their chances though, which gave the 30 strong travelling fans something to be positive about. First of all Byers had a go from an angle but his shot flew past the top corner, while both Ally Mitchell and Paul Deas came close, with a shot that went straight into the arms of Stuart Garden and just over the crossbar respectively.

However, County went straight up the park and broke the deadlock. A long hopeful punt from the County defence found Alex Burke who was clearly in an offside position, and with City players appealing for offside, the former Queen of the South striker ran on with the ball, dribbled round Nelson and tapped the ball into the empty net from an awkward angle. Nelson was to thank for keeping the scoreline down though, a cross from Don Cowie on the right hand side was headed powerfully towards goal by Sean Webb, but Nelly pulled off an outstanding save to deny the big defender. Minutes later City had the ball in the net as Craig Wibter lobbed former City keeper Stuart Garden but the linesman had already put up his flag for offside.

The second half was a rather dull and dreary affair, but the good thing was it was City who was playing the better football and creating the better chances. However, it was a bad day for the strikers when Scott Walker looked the most likely to score for us. The big defender recieved the ball at his feet in front of goal but instead dallyed on the ball and his pass was careless and was intercepted by a County defender. Seconds later though, Walker did get a shot on goal when his strike from inside the area was tipped over the bar by Stuart Garden, and from the resulting corner Scotty headed narrowly wide.

In the last ten minutes City put the County rearguard under some serious pressure, something we haven't done for weeks as we could have gone on all night without scoring but this time Brechin actually looked like scoring. Paul Ritchie made a run down the right hand side before going for glory but his shot went along the face of goal, before Alex Burns had a go from the edge of the area.

Nelson made an outstanding save in the last minute to deny David Winters, but all three points stayed in Dingwall as Brechin still seek their first win, lets hope it will come next week against Stranraer!
